
The Tug-of-War: Keeping Your Prints Sharp and Your Glass Strong
If you’ve ever worked with glass screen printing, you know the headache. It’s a constant battle between curing the ink and tempering the glass. It feels like a trap. You crank up the heat to get the glass strong, and suddenly your ink bleeds or burns, leaving you with a smeared mess. But if you play it too safe with the temperature? The glass stays fragile. One wrong move and it shatters. We deal with this by using specific quartz infrared lamps built for integrated tempering lines. Here is how it actually works. Getting the heat where it matters The secret is using short-wave quartz emitters. Instead of just searing the surface—which is how you get those ruined prints—these lamps push the heat deep into the glass. It lets you hit that tempering point fast. But you have to be careful about “cold spots.” If the power isn’t spread evenly across the tube, you get uneven stress in the glass. When we pick out these lamps, we look closely at the power-to-length ratio. High-wattage tubes give you the punch you need to keep the line moving quickly, but just keep in mind: they’ll put a lot more pressure on your wiring and power supply. Handling the heat We use high-purity quartz for the lamps. Why? Because tempering ovens are brutal. The constant cycling between extreme heat and cooling would crack cheaper materials. By placing these in the heating zones, we can ramp up the temperature gradually. It’s a much gentler process, which keeps the ink from blistering. The real-world trade-off Here is the thing: you can’t just turn everything up to eleven and expect it to work. High-intensity IR lamps throw off a massive amount of heat. If your cooling fans aren’t up to the task, the ambient heat just builds up in the oven. That’s when the ink starts to migrate, and those crisp edges on your print start to blur. It’s all a balancing act. You have to tune your lamp output to your conveyor speed. Get it right, and you get a sharp, clean pattern and glass that’s tough as nails.
