
Cutting through ultra-thick glass is a brutal process. If you’ve ever tried it, you know the feeling—that stubborn resistance that makes your cutting wheel scream. Cold glass is just too brittle. When you try to force a diamond wheel through a thick slab, the glass fights back. The result? Your tools wear out way too fast and you end up with annoying chips everywhere. That’s why we use high-penetration infrared (IR) preheating lamps. Essentially, we’re prepping the glass before the blade even touches it. How it actually works Most heaters just warm up the surface, which doesn’t do much for thick glass. You need short-wave IR radiation because it actually sinks deep into the material. By hitting the cutting line with this specific kind of heat, we drop the internal tension of the glass. It “softens” the path. Instead of a fight, the cutting wheel just glides through. It feels smoother, the break is way cleaner, and your wheels actually last for a decent amount of time. The technical side of things We use high-wattage quartz tubes because they pack the punch needed to get the heat into the core of the glass before the cutting head moves on. Just a heads-up: make sure your power supply matches the lamp’s voltage. If you don’t, you’ll burn out the filament in no time. One thing to watch out for: these lamps get incredibly hot. If you cram them too tightly into the cutting head, you’re going to bake your lead screws and motor housing. It’s a quick way to fry your electronics. Definitely double-check your cooling fans and heat sinks to keep things chill. Keeping it running Installing these is pretty straightforward—they’re designed to drop right into your standard preheating arrays. We also use heavy-duty connectors so you don’t have to worry about terminals melting under the current. And here’s a pro tip: keep an eye on your reflectors. Every few months, give them a good clean. Dust builds up, which blocks the heat from getting deep into the glass. When that happens, the lamps have to run hotter to do the same job, which just wears everything out faster. Keep them shiny, and your thermal profile stays right where it needs to be.
