
Picking the Right Infrared Heater for Your Bathroom (Without Overdoing It)
Let’s be honest: nobody likes stepping out of a hot shower into a freezing cold bathroom. It’s the worst part of the morning. To fix that, you need an infrared heater, but you can’t just grab any lamp off the shelf. Since we’re dealing with water and electricity, you’ve got to look for anIPX4 rating. Basically, that’s just a fancy way of saying the unit can handle splashes from any direction without shorting out. It’s your safety net.
Getting the Wattage Right
Here is the thing: more power isn’t always better. If you put a massive heater in a tiny room, you’re just wasting electricity and turning your bathroom into a sauna. For a small powder room—something under 4m²—keep it simple. A 250W to 400W lamp is plenty. It keeps the surfaces warm and the chill away without making you sweat. But if you’ve got a big master bath (around 8m² to 12m²), you’ll need more muscle. I usually go with 600W or 800W. I always suggest shortwave infrared here. Why? Because it heatsyou, not the air. It’s nearly instant. No more waiting around for a clunky old convection heater to finally kick in.
Don’t Create “Hot Spots”
There’s a bit of a balancing act here. High wattage means intense heat. If you slap an 800W lamp into a tiny shower stall, you’re going to feel like you’re being grilled. Or worse, the thermal cutout will trip and shut the whole thing down. If you’re using a high-wattage unit, mount it higher up. This spreads the heat out in a wider cone so it feels natural. If your ceilings are low, don’t try to force a powerful lamp in there. Instead, use a couple of lower-wattage units spread apart. It’s a much more comfortable vibe.
The Boring (But Important) Safety Stuff
When you’re wiring this up, put it on a dedicated GFCI circuit. Period. And please, double-check your seals. Even with that IPX4 rating, a loose gasket is a disaster waiting to happen. Steam loves to find its way into wiring terminals. Make sure everything is airtight. One last tip: use high-temp wiring. The area near the lamp head gets seriously hot, and you don’t want your insulation melting or degrading over time. Just do it right the first time, and you can forget about it for years.
