Getting the Heat Right for Pet Treat Dehydration
If you’re running an export-grade plant for dried fruit or pet treats, you’ve probably noticed a shift. The old-school convection ovens are starting to fade out. People are moving toward shortwave infrared (IR) lamps instead. We build these lamps to be the heavy lifters in conveyor lines. The goal is simple: strip the moisture off the surface fast, but don’t cook the inside of the treat into a brick.
The Power Stuff
We usually go with high-wattage quartz tubes for these setups. Whether you’re running 230V or 400V, it’s all about that heat flux. Here’s the thing: shortwave IR doesn’t wait around for hot air to blow across the product. It dives right in and vibrates the water molecules. It’s fast. Really fast. But there’s a catch. With that kind of heat, your belt speed has to be spot on. If your product lingers too long under a 2000W tube, you’ll end up with a scorched exterior while the middle is still damp. It’s a balancing act.
Quartz and the Nitty-Gritty
We use heavy-wall quartz glass because these lamps get hammered by rapid heating and cooling cycles. They need to be tough. Most of our units use R7s or SK15 connectors. Why? Because they just work. They’re standard, meaning you can swap them into most machinery globally without hunting for some weird custom adapter. Plus, if your shop is humid or full of organic dust, we’ve got coated tubes. These coatings tweak the light spectrum so the water in the treats absorbs the heat better. Less wasted energy, better results.
Making it Work on the Floor
The best part is the space you save. You can toss the massive blowers and the endless ducting. All you really need is a steady power supply and a reflector that won’t warp when things get hot. These lamps are becoming the go-to for export plants because they handle global voltages easily and turn a drying process that used to take hours into something that takes minutes. Just one tip: keep an eye on your cooling fans. Make sure they can handle the heat buildup in the housing, or you’ll risk frying your wiring.
