Cutting glass tubes is all about hitting the right spot with the right amount of heat. The problem is, if you’re using old-school resistive heaters, you’re fighting “thermal inertia.” Basically, they take too long to warm up and even longer to cool down. You end up with “heat soak,” which messes up your dimensions or forces you to crawl along at a snail’s pace just to keep things precise. That’s why we stick with shortwave infrared (SWIR) lamps. They don’t waste time heating up the air around the glass; they just dump energy straight into the surface. It’s instant.
Getting the Heat Exactly Where It Needs to Go
When your glass is moving fast on a line, you can’t afford a lag. You need heat that hits full blast in milliseconds. Since glass absorbs shortwave radiation so quickly, you can keep a very tight temperature window right at the cutting point. If your lamp is slow to respond, the heat spreads unevenly. That creates stress in the tube, and before you know it, you’ve got cracks appearing during the cooling phase. Nobody wants that.
Dialing in the Power
For the heavy-duty stuff—like thick-walled quartz or borosilicate—we use lamps with a high wattage-to-length ratio. It ensures the heat is intense enough to actually do the job. The best part? Because they ramp up so fast, you can pulse the power to match the speed of the tube. You aren’t just heating up the entire machine frame for no reason. One heads-up, though: these lamps put out a lot of raw energy. If your reflectors or wiring aren’t rated for high heat, they’ll fry. Make sure your shielding is actually built for the wattage you’re running.
Keeping the Line Moving
There is nothing worse than a burnt-out lamp bringing your entire production line to a grinding halt for hours. We use standard connectors—think R7s or Sk15—so you can just pop a new one in and get back to work. It’s a simple swap. By putting fast-response IR at the cutting stage, you stop thinking in “batches” and start thinking in “flow.” You get a clean cut and an immediate anneal all in one go. You can finally ditch those slow, clunky lehrs and just let the glass keep moving.
